The Grand Prix de Saint Cloud

The Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud is reserved for experienced horses aged four years and over. It is run over the blue riband distance of a mile and a half, to match the greatest race in the world – the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

For the top horses, the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud is part of the preparation for that international showcase event, which will be held this year on Sunday 1 October at the Hippodrome Paris Longchamp.

Looking back at 2022:
Alpinista, which also went on to win the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe 2022, took the laurels last year and broke the track record which had been held by Moon Madness for no less than 35 years!

For one day only, Saint-Cloud racecourse will be transformed into an open-air artist’s studio!

A grand painting competition is being held, with the challenge being to capture all the atmosphere of the racetrack!

Artists come from far and wide to set up their easels and take part in this famous painting competition via the work created on the day. 50 artists were involved from 8 o’clock in the morning in a bid to encapsulate the ambience of the festivities at the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

Following the first exhibition in Paris of the Impressionists Group in 1874, the French public started to become familiar with some of the biggest names in the movement such as Monet, Renoir, Degas, Sisley and Pissarro. And with one exception, all of them painted in a completely new way – in the great outdoors.

Armed with their easels and a lunch basket, the Impressionists explored Paris and the surrounding region, focusing on fleeting moments and atmospheres and capturing the poetic truth of what they saw. Degas was an artist who loved horse-racing, and even now, his paintings give us a glimpse of what the tracks were like back then. The “luncheons on the grass” meanwhile were a huge part of the movement and have remained in the collective conscience ever since.
