A global event

The world’s biggest race

For more than 100 years now, the racing world has been descending on ParisLongchamp on the first weekend in October for the biggest event on the calender: the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

A world championship in everything but name only, the race is contested by outstanding thoroughbreds and the world’s best jockeys. A legendary challenge, it fires the imagination of punters around the world.

The Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is broadcast in more than 60 countries around the world, with millions of viewers holding their breaths.

The event attracts more than 250 accredited journalists from 26 countries.

Arc weekend is a cosmopolitan occasion, with 35,000 spectators of every nationality packing into the stands at ParisLongchamp.

Such is the noise in the stands that it drowns out the horses’ pounding hooves as they cross the finish line.

See you there on Saturday 5 September and Sunday 6 October 2024!

#QPATINSIDE

Throughout the day on Sunday, join our ambassadors Robert Pirès (French team), Stephen Power @racingblogger (English team), and Julien Marcy (Japanese team) on the X account (formerly Twitter) @FranceGalop. They will take you behind the scenes of this global event and make you experience the heart of the biggest race in the world!

And to prepare for this magnificent day, Robert Pirès actually visited Chantilly training center last week with France Galop and met jockey Stéphane Pasquier and trainer Nicolas Caullery.

Watch the video now to relive this meeting between enthusiasts!
  • Named Best Race in the World five times in the last eight years.
  • Winners by country in 102 editions of the Arc:
In horse racing, it is the country where the horse is trained that determines their nationality and not the country where they are born or the nationality of their owners.
    🇫🇷 France: 69
    🇬🇧 England: 16
    🇮🇪 Irland: 8
    🇮🇹 Italy: 6
    🇩🇪 Germany: 3
  • EUR 5 million
The biggest purse in French racing, making the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe one of the richest races in the world.
  • 2.24.49: the fastest ever time recorded in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
It was posted by the German filly Danedream in 2011. Her average speed was over 60km/h.
  • Only eight two-time winners in 100 editions.
Eight horses have won the Arc twice: Ksar (in 1921 and 1922), Motrico (in 1930 and 1932), Corrida (in 1936 and 1937), Tantième (in 1950 and 1951), Ribot (in 1955 and 1956), Alleged (in 1977 and 1978), Trêve (in 2013 and 2014) and Enable (in 2017 and 2018). No horse has yet done the treble, despite several attempts.

The stall draw for the 103rd Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe will be broadcast live on the Equidia channel in September 2024.

The most coveted numbers are the lowest ones, next to the rail, with the horses drawn into them having the shortest distance to travel.

The most successful number since 1980 is 2, followed very closely by 6.
Torquator Tasso upset the odds in 2021, winning from stall number 12.

The Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend is:

  • 35,000 spectators expected
  • 50 nationalities represented
  • 2,600 people working at the ParisLongchamp racecourse on Arc weekend
  • 200 different occupations on duty at the big weekend
  • 55.5 hectares at ParisLongchamp racecourse
  • 55,000 square metres of lawn for the public to stroll on
  • 160 metres long: the grandstand at ParisLongchamp
  • A mile and a half: the classic distance over which the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is run
  • 17 hectares of racetrack
  • 10cm: the height of the grass on the track
  • 80 ground staff looking after the track
  • 350 horses on the start line for the weekend’s 27 races
  • 17 tonnes of straw lining the horses’ stables
  • 450kg: the average weight of a racehorse
  • 60 to 65 km/h: the average speed of the Arc winner
